How to play Wordle

Enter a valid five-letter word and press Enter. The tiles then give you information about the hidden answer. A green tile means the letter and position are correct. An orange tile means the letter appears in the answer but belongs somewhere else. A gray tile means that letter is not part of the answer under the puzzle's letter rules.

  1. Choose a useful five-letter opening guess.
  2. Read every green, orange and gray clue.
  3. Keep green letters in their known positions.
  4. Move orange letters to positions you have not ruled out.
  5. Use later guesses to test remaining possibilities and solve within six attempts.

Wordle strategy: how to make better guesses

Choose an information-rich opener

Many players like openers such as SLATE, CRANE, STARE, AROSE or RAISE because they test common letters and vowels. There is no universally best first word, so choose a style that helps you think clearly.

Do not waste a guess

If you have several possible answers, use a guess that tests useful letters instead of repeating information you already know. This can shrink the candidate list before your final solve.

Remember repeated letters

A five-letter answer can contain a repeated letter. If a guess gives an unexpected gray tile for a repeated character, read the complete row rather than assuming that every copy behaves identically.

Use patterns, not just individual letters

Once you have a few clues, consider common spelling patterns, endings and letter combinations. Wordle rewards both vocabulary and logical elimination.

Daily Wordle and Wordle Unlimited

The daily game is a single featured puzzle to return to each day. Wordle Unlimited is for extra practice when you want to keep playing after the daily challenge. You can also use unlimited puzzles to test opening words and practise recognizing common five-letter patterns.
